Mona Chitre is chief pharmacy officer and vice president for workplace wellness at Excellus BlueCross BlueShield, part of a family of companies that finances and delivers vital health care services to about 1.6 million people across upstate New York.
Her responsibilities include oversight of all pharmacy management functions, including management of $2 billion in overall drug spend, compliance, and clinical strategy and operational execution. She also leads the workplace wellness team in delivering high-quality wellness solutions to the company’s key customers.
With Excellus BlueCross BlueShield since August 2000, Chitre’s professional experience covers research, medical writing, academia and retail pharmacy. Currently an assistant clinical professor at Wegmans School of Pharmacy at St. John Fisher College, Rochester, N.Y., Chitre has published more than 30 articles, is on the editorial boards of two journals and has presented in numerous national forums.
Chitre is a Rochester Business Journal “40 Under 40” honoree and also has been recognized as a 2014 “Woman to Watch” by the Diversity Journal and is a fellow of the AHIP Foundation’s Executive Leadership Program.
She has served on the board of directors of the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Rochester, Victor Central School District Health and Wellness Committee and Rochester School District Mentor Program.
Chitre completed her undergraduate and graduate training at Rutgers University in New Jersey and her post-doctoral primary care residency at the VA Medical Center in Buffalo, N.Y. She also has received her certification in geriatric pharmacy from the Commission for the Certification in Geriatric Pharmacy.
A registered pharmacist in New York and New Jersey, Chitre has most recently been appointed by the Board of Regents of the State Education Department to the New York State Board of Pharmacy, where she will help guide the pharmacy profession in New York state.
